The 2012 Scion iQ premium micro-subcompact will begin arriving in dealerships in October of 2011. Its only 10 feet long but seats four people. I wasn’t in love with it when I first saw it but I must admit that I think its growing on me. It starts at $15,265 and its 1.3-liter, four-cylinder that produces 94 horsepower and 89 lb.-ft of torque.
The 2011 Volkswagen Nils electric concept shown at the 2011 64th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt is a bit of an oddball, and some would say not a real hatchback, but I think it qualifies on two counts. The rear opens like a hatch, and I like Volkswagen. Who knows, this might be what the future of hatchbacks is.
The GTi has long been one of my top favorite hatchbacks, and this 1984 Volkswagen GTI Mk 1 is probably as close as you’re gonna get to an original MK1. It was on display at Volkswagen of America headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan for approximately seven years. Volkswagen’s recent move to Virginia caused the car to be sold in February of 2011. The 2012 Ferrari FF could possibly be the most beautiful hatchback put on the market in some time. It’s an odd offering from Ferrari, but also a brilliant one. The FF – an acronym for Ferrari Four (four seats and four-wheel drive). Designed by Pininfarina, The FF features the company’s first ever four-wheel drive system. The new 6,262 cc direct injection V12 engine which develops 660 CV at 8,000 rpm. More on Cartype.
The 2012 Hyundai Veloster is called a three-door coupe, but it’s a hatchback as we see it. It had a world debut at the 201 North American International Auto Show. It’s all-new 1.6-liter GDI Gamma engine paired with proprietary Hyundai six-speed manual transmission and Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission delivers up to 40 mpg highway. It is loaded with all kinds of tech stuff, from a standard multi-function seven-inch touch-screen display, Pandora® internet radio capability, Gracenote® display technology with voice recognition, Virtual CD downloading, AVI and mpeg video playback via USB, Video game console connectivity with 115-volt power outlet, Bluetooth® hands-free phone system with voice recognition, just to name a few. The 2011 Audi A2 electric only powertrain premium-class concept shows us the future of electric mobility at the 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2011. It has a flat interior floorboard, next phase in LED technology, known as matrix beam and a red bar of light flows forward from the tail lights when braking and demonstrates the strength of the brakes intuitively for other road users.
1988 Dodge Colt GT Turbo had a turbocharged 16-valve, DOHC 1.6 liter powerplant, power rack and pinion steering, power 4-wheel disc brakes, taut sports suspension, performance radials, a super slippery profile and a lot of spunk. Inside the Colt GT Turbo had ample elbow room, comfortable sport buckets, a telescoping tilt steering wheel, an ergonomically advanced interior and impressive dash graphics and instrumentation.
The 1983 front wheel drive Dodge Colt GTS offered 35MPG city and 45MPG highway and was imported for Dodge (and Plymouth). With matte black accents all around, rakish spoiler, side glass louvers, wide tires, GTS badges and racing stripes, this Colt looked the part of the fun machine that it was. Under the hood its engine had an extra air intake valve in each cylinder teamed up with Colt’s exclusive Twin-Stick power train which gave you a bit more power in every gear.
The 1986 Yugo 45GL Supermini 3-door hatchback’s MSRP was £3,399. This compact boasted style, generous room, comfortable upholstered seats and fully carpeted interior with a cavernous 27.5 cu.ft. of luggage space. Standard features included front wheel drive, all round independent suspension, front wheel disc brakes and reliable and proven 903cc engine. Safety features included dual braking, a laminated windscreen and rear wash/wiper. It had a one year unlimited mileage and mechanical warranty plus a 3-year bodywork maintenance program. Th 45GL included alloy wheels and low profile tires, a front air dam and rear spoiler, a radio stereo cassette unit and digital clock in a central console and front and rear fog lamps.
From what I can tell, the 1989 Vauxhall Cavalier SRI 5-door hatchback had a poor reputation, but as usual, the advertising proudly promoted the road holding and handling from powerful engines.
The Talbot Horizon Silver Fox sold for £5,199. It had a 1442cc engine that achieved 51.4 mpg at a steady 56 mph. It had distinctive duo-tone paintwork in Fox Grey and Silver. The interior offers push button radio and seat fabric in light and dark grey fabric. It had stylish alloy wheels and was topped off with a glass sunroof.
The 1976 Datsun B210 Hatchback got 41 mpg highway and 29 city. It had a 1400cc high cam engine, matched to a durable 4-speed manual transmission, with an optional 3-speed automatic also available. It had standard fully reclining bucket seats and power assist front disc brakes.
The 1983 Vauxhall Mk1 Astra GTE had a 1.8 liter engine with Bosch LE Jetronic fuel injection producing 115 bhp. Mated to a 5-speed gearbox, it took the car from 0 to 60 in just 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 116 mph. The GTE boasted a suspension that incorporated anti-roll bars, upgraded springs and gas pre-loaded shock absorbers. It had ultra low profile tires on 5.5″ alloy wheels with ventilated front disc brakes.
The interior included thick carpeting, tinted windows, radio/stereo cassette player, complete with four speakers and Recaro front seats.
The 1976 V6 powered AMC Hornet X Hatchback came with slot-styled steel wheels, rally stripes, and sports steering wheel.
