Hyundai Excel : 1984

1984 Hyundai Excel

The 1984 Hyundai Excel 3-door hatchback’s MSRP was just $4995 with room for 5. At the time, it had more standard features than any other car in its class, like an electric rear-window defroster, wall-to-wall carpeting and full size Goodyear steel-belted spare tire. Under the hood was a 1.5 liter overhead-cam engine and front wheel drive. It even came with the “Cross Country Motor Club” membership for road side assistance.

The Ford Laser Hatchback 1500 DOCH sold in much of Asia in the late nineties. It did not come to North America because of the false belief that hatchback don’t sell here. We got the Escort ZX2 instead because it had a trunk. Also available as the Mazda 323 three door (with a different front), but Mazda didn’t sell them here, either. (source: Hugo90)

Sunbeam Alpine Harrington LeMans coupe : 1962

1962 Sunbeam Alpine Harrington LeMans coupe

Not real sure why they called the 1962 Sunbeam Alpine Harrington LeMans Coupe a coupe, but it looks like a hatchback to me. Less than 250 were built (most for the US) and one of them is available for sale at Hyman.

BMW 1 Series : 2012

2012 BMW 1 Series

The second generation of the new BMW 1 Series is still the only rear-wheel-drive model in its class. Model versions include the 116i, 118i, 116d, 118d, and the 120d. This is not my favorite Bimmer, but it’s better than the coupe. The Four-cylinder in-line diesel has 184 hp, and you can read more on Cartype.

The newly developed rear bumper shield gave it the ability to absorb minor knocks without damage.
