Nissan Prairie : 1985

1985 Nissan Prairie

Could this 1985 Nissan Prairie be any uglier? Some might ask this but I think it’s awkward profile could make it something interesting to have.

This vehicle was all about space, and luxury – according to Nissan. The roof line is 8″ higher than a typical car and the load platform is only 17″ from the ground. There are no central door pillars and the rear doors slide back to leave a clear open space. Even the seat belts are built-in to the front does to create more space. The interior is not only spacious, it is infinitely flexible. The rear seats recline, just like the front ones, or fold forward to give a cavernous storage space four feet high and five feet long. Or you can fold all the seats flat into a double bed for overnight camping.

The Prairie has a highly efficient lightweight OHC engine, with either 1.5 liters or a 1.8 liter (which had a top speed of 100 MPH), depending on the level of performance you want. Both engines are fitted transversely to give even more space and drive the front wheels though a five speed overdrive gearbox for outstanding economy and safe, sure handling. The high level of equipment included push-button radio, heat-reflecting glass, quartz clock, remote control for door mirrors and tailgate and petrol flaps, all standard. There was even a new “Anniversary II” model, with extra luxury items such as electric windows. Lastly, it came with a 100,000 mile/3-year warranty and a 6-year body warranty.

Vauxhall Cavalier SRI : 1989

1989 Vauxhall Cavalier SRI

From what I can tell, the 1989 Vauxhall Cavalier SRI 5-door hatchback had a poor reputation, but as usual, the advertising proudly promoted the road holding and handling from powerful engines.

Kia Rio 5 : 2012

2012 Kia Rio 5

It’s not too often I speak highly of Kia, but their recent shift in product improvements (across the board) has impressed me so greatly that I felt compelled to comend them, particularly on the 2012 Kia Rio 5 hatchback.

Mazda2 Capella : 2004

2004 Mazda2 Capella

Like the Mazda2 Antares, the 2004 Mazda2 Capella the same comfortable surroundings, but with a bit more sophistication and style. An already high level of equipment was increased even further with electric front and rear windows, and for those winter mornings, the electric exterior mirrors are heated as well. Outside, distinctive 15″ alloy wheels give the Mazda2 Capella a unique look with a confidence stance that alludes to the excellent driving dynamics. The chrome tailpipe added the perfect finishing touch. More on Mazda.

Peugeot 104s : 1980

1980 Peugeot 104s

The 1980 Peugeot 104s luxury 5-door sports hatchback was powered by a 1360 cc aluminum alloy engine with twin choke carburetor. It’s top speed was around the 100 mph mark and reached 0-60 in just over 10 seconds. It had four wheel independent suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars which made the ride comfortable but swift. The dual circuit power assisted brakes with front discs gave it the assurance of positive, safe braking.

From the outside, the 104S distinguished itself from the crowd with its crisp aerodynamic lines, wide aluminum alloy wheels and racing color paint finish with contrasting sports body stripes and matt black trim.

The inside “sporty” feeling continued with black cloth upholstery trimmed with red or blue stripes and the reclining front seats were fitted with matching head restraints. Electric front windows and tinted glass were all standard, as was the quartz digital clock, radio console and modern touch button controls. All that in a package that gave you 24.5 cu. ft of space with the rear seats folded down.

The 1980 Citroen GSA had something that was unique to Citroen: hydropneumatic, self-leveling suspension. Instantly, when a blow-out occurs, this system compensates for the shift in the balance of the car, so it could be steered and driven almost as though nothing had happened. This 5-door hatchback had a 1300 cc engine and was mated to a 5-speed gearbox making it capable of 100 mph.
