We just love hatchbacks.
The 1980 Citroen GSA had something that was unique to Citroen: hydropneumatic, self-leveling suspension. Instantly, when a blow-out occurs, this system compensates for the shift in the balance of the car, so it could be steered and driven almost as though nothing had happened. This 5-door hatchback had a 1300 cc engine and was mated to a 5-speed gearbox making it capable of 100 mph.

This 1974 BMW 2002 Touring Tii is a rare breed. It’s not often we see a BMW hatchback, especially in Alpina trim, with a sun roof and finished in “Inka”, a highly sought 1970s color. It even has the original, very light green tinted glass. How cool is that?

This 1992 Lancia Delta Integrale is #136 of 400 Martini 5 special edition models produced and come to us via BaT, who always have the most unique and rare rides on the web. The Martini 5 series was released in the summer of 1992 after Lancia won the Rallye World Championship for a fifth time. Even the decals are just classic. With 130bhp, the 1984 Abarth Fiat Strada 130 TC went from zero to 60mph in less than eight seconds and could go as fast as 122mph. It had a twin cam 2-liter engine linked to a ZF 5-speed gearbox. Low profile tires on alloy wheels reduce unsprung weight and the suspension and brakes are honed to an edge to match the performance.

The guild of Motoring Writers rated the 1990 Skoda Favorit as one of the top ten cars of 1990. It was designed by Bertone of Italy, with British and German engineering input. This 5-door hatchback offered 5 gears and a 1300cc engine. It had a two-year unlimited warranty, got 53.3 mpg and sold for as little as £4,997.

During the first 6 months of 1977, LeCar had amassed a total of 57 firsts, second and third place finishes in 52 SCCA races.
The 1978 Renault LeCar got 41 mpg. It was front wheel drive, had rack and pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension and Michelin steel-belted radials.

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. unveiled the Subaru XV concept at the 2011 Auto Shanghai. They are calling it a “crossover” but we think that due to the smaller size, it feels more like a large hatchback. The glass roof is very nice, as is the interior. Read more on this vehicle at Cartype.

The 1985 Peugeot 205 Van hatchback’s conversion from a car to a van traded its rear seats for more functional purposes giving you 42.4 cubic feet and 415 kg maximum payload weight. Standard features included adjustable seats with head restraints, ergonomically inspired controls, remotely controlled door mirror, heated rear window plus great all round visibility. You could get a 1124 cc petrol or 1769 cc diesel engine.
Available in the Standard and the GL specification (with extras such as a five speed gear box, push button radio and rear wash/wipe).

The 1983 Vauxhall Nova’s 1.0 and 1.2 liter LET engines delivered an impressive 57.6 mpg (60.1 mpg with the optional 5-speed gearbox). Every model had power brakes, a laminated windscreen, an intermittent rear wash/wipe wiper and halogen headlamps. The L models included a push button radio and a driver’s door mirror that adjusts from inside the car. It started at £3,494 to £4,273. The Corsa A was rebadged as the Vauxhall Nova between 1983 and 1993, primarily for the British market. The basic model was called just the Corsa, which was followed by the Corsa Luxus, Corsa Berlina and the sporty Corsa SR, seen below as a 1985 model.

The 1983 Mitsubishi Colt Mirage Turbo 1400 hatchback with it’s alloy wheels, flared wheel arches, aerodynamic front and rear spoliers and stereo radio/cassette sold for £6,500 and got 43.1 MPG. There were six models to choose from, starting with the 1250 EL at only £3,900. Two 1400 models with a choice of 3 or 5 doors. All requiring major service at 12,000 miles.
Standard features on all Mirage Hatchbacks are such luxuries as a laminated windscreen, all-round independent suspension, heated rear window, warning lights from everything from “Door Open” to “Low Fuel”, an aluminized exhaust system and metallic paint finish at no extra cost. Most model also included a push-button radio, tinted glass and rear window wash/wipe. It had a 3-year warranty.

The 1977 Chrysler Alpine was quite boastful that year, claiming to be the world’s first seven-day-a-week car that starts like a Rolls Royce with it’s electronic ignition. The 1977 Datsun Cherry FII Hatchback was part of a lineup that included a coupe, an estate, a two door or four door saloon and two hatchbacks. Both hatchbacks had a fold down seat. There were front wheel drive with a transverse 1171cc engine (988cc for the other models). They came with power-assisted dual circuit brakes. This car helped make Datsun one of Britain’s leading car importer for three years.

The 1995 Peugeot 205 Mardi Gras was available as a 3 and 5 door hatchback with a choice of a 1.1 litre or 1.6 litre petrol automatic or a 1.8 litre and 1.8 litre turbo diesel. It features boasted unique “Mardi Gras” graphics, tinted glass all around, a pop-up sunroof and a tailgate was/wipe.
